A review of available research shows that this statement is false.

The majority of unproductive conflict is due to:

  • Structural issues
  • Personal differences

Structural issues can be resolved through crafting overarching performance goals, expanding available resources, job redesign, transfers or changing formal structures and reporting relationships.

Personal differences are best addressed with all staff before conflict sets in, through diversity training that explores  the real and valued differences that exist between people with different personalities, values and motivational needs.
