Peak Potential Book Review
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’ by Marshall Goldsmith is the must read management book of 2007. Marshall starts by outlining the problem of success. Your existing approaches to leadership have got you to where you are today. This leads you to hold certain beliefs which can hold you back from making the necessary changes you need in order to get where you want to be in the future – a promotion or being more effective in your current role. Three common beliefs that leaders hold which can prevent them from learning to be more effective are:
- Overestimating our contributions to past successes and status, whilst conveniently ignoring failures.
- An overly optimistic, I can do anything attitude that leads to over commitment and a subsequent I didn’t have time response as to why they haven’t made desired behavioural changes.
- I choose how I act now and therefore I do not want to change my existing leadership behaviours.
Most people are familiar with the to-do list. In part two of the book, Marshall outlines a to-stop list, comprised of twenty stupid things leaders tend to do that they should stop doing. The remainder of the book explains how you can go about making high impact and sustained changes in yourleadership behaviour.
In What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There, Goldsmith presents a clear, energetic, grounded and action-orientated approach to helping all leaders enhance their effectiveness in a personal and tailored way.
